Biopsies and Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA)

Oran Park Radiology offers image-guided biopsy and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures to assist in the diagnosis of a range of medical conditions. These minimally invasive procedures involve collecting small tissue or cell samples, which are then analysed by a specialist pathologist.

A biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue, while a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) uses a thin needle to collect cells from a targeted area. Both procedures are performed using imaging guidance, such as ultrasound or CT, to ensure accuracy and precision.

FNAs are commonly used to assess areas such as thyroid nodules, breast lumps and enlarged lymph nodes.

FAQs

Yes, all biopsy and FNA procedures are performed by appointment. A referral from your doctor is required, and recent imaging of the area may be needed prior to the procedure to assist with planning.

Preparation instructions will be provided when your appointment is booked. In general:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Arrive early to allow time for paperwork
  • You may be advised to arrange transport home following the procedure

Please inform our team if you are taking blood-thinning medications or have any medical conditions that may affect the procedure.

Please bring:

  • Your referral form
  • Any relevant prior imaging or reports
  • Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable
  • WorkCover or insurance details if the procedure relates to a workplace injury

A member of our clinical team will explain the procedure and answer any questions before it begins. Imaging guidance is used to accurately target the area of concern.

  • FNAs involve a fine needle to collect cells
  • Biopsies involve taking a small tissue sample

Both procedures are generally quick and well tolerated. Once completed, the radiologist prepares a report and sends the results to your referring doctor.

Some procedures may incur an out of pocket cost.  If any out-of-pocket costs apply, our team will discuss these with you prior to your appointment.

Reports are usually available within 24–48 hours. If your referral is marked as urgent, please let our team know so your results can be prioritised.
