Traffic was briefly stopped in Oran Park this morning as a massive piece of medical equipment was craned into a new radiology practice.

The state of the art 3T MRI system – which weighs seven tonnes – cost $6 million, and travelled 16,000 kilometres to reach the soon-to-be-opened Oran Park Radiology practice.

Dr Behnam Moharami said he wanted to give patients the best possible experience when coming for scans.

“Some of the most common issues, I’ve found, with radiology equipment is the size, the technology, the speed, and the quality of the imaging is not perfect,” he said.

“This new machine has got the latest technology for CAT scans, with the highest-quality images. It’s pretty fast and has the lowest dose of radiation that’s possible while still being practical.

“It’s all about patient safety and comfort.”

Dr Moharami said the machine would provide scans to check for a wide range of conditions, from traumatic or sports injuries, to infections, appendicitis and more.

“Medical imaging provides a bit of an investigation into what’s happening inside your body, and people get scans for lots of different reasons,” he said.

“Imaging technology is constantly changing, which is why we’ve put such a focus on investing considerable resources in the imaging equipment that will provide the best advantages to our patients.”

Dr Moharami said he hoped Oran Park Radiology would help fill the medical imagining needs of the rapidly growing Macarthur region.

He said the practice would have capacity to see plenty of patients every day.

“Throughout the day we’ll likely do 30-plus CAT scans, 10-15 MRIs, heaps of X-rays and ultrasounds, musculoskeletal injections, biopsies and more,” he said.

“We’ve got the capacity to see to 120-150 patients a day, based on our forecasting numbers, and we do have the ability to expand if we get more patients.”

Dr Moharami said Oran Park Radiology was not corporate-owned and had the small business touch. He said he hoped to see lots of support from the community.

The practice is set to open on October 12, on Podium Way.

Mark Perich, director of Oran Park developers’ Greenfields, said Oran Park Radiology was a great addition to the growing suburb.

“Our residents now have additional high quality medical services making Oran Park a truly integrated health hub,” he said.

“Imaging services such as these will be a real asset. Locals will be able to get CT, X-ray, ultrasound and now the latest MRI technology right in their backyard.”
